Baptist Men's Day - 2011

Baptist Men's Day - 2011

Chad presented an inspiring message for those present for the Baptist Men's Day Service. Using a theme of the "choices we make" Chad reminded us of the apsotle Peter and some of the choices he made and quoted from books by Charles Swindoll. Using Micah 6:8 "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (NIV), Chad reminded us that the choices we make have consequences. When presented which situations in our daily life we often believe that we have many choices, when in fact we may have several options - but only ONE choice. As we live our lives we are reminded that the choices we make not only effect us, but also those around us.
Doug Riggs (Invocation), Dave Pollok (Welcome), Lee Moody(Scripture), and Clint Fields (Offertory) also participated in the annual service.

Candles of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love, and Christ Candle

The history of the Advent Wreath and Candles dates pack to post-Reformation Germany.  Tradition has that many German families had a custom of lighting four candles during Advent ( a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas). The season of Advent includes the four Sundays before December 25.  When these candles were lit, scripture and prayer were a part of the custom and the family devotion time was time spent teaching the children about Christ's coming.  Later, the custom passed to different denominations and they adapted its use.  Currently, many Protestant and Catholic churches use the Advent as part of their Christmas celebration.

Chrismons
For many years our church has enjoyed the beauty of the Chrismon tree.  Do you know the history of Chrismons? The Chrismon Tree originated in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, VA in 1957.  The evergreen tree, which symbolizes the eternal life which our savior has won for us, is a background for tiny white lights and white and gold Chrismons.  The lights speak of Him Who is the LIght of the world, and the Chrismons (CHRISt + MONogram) proclain the Name, the LIfe, and the saving Acts of Jesus the Christ.

Some Chrismons are simple copies of symbols of Christianity from its earliest days; others are new explanations of God's Never-Changing presence in our ever-changing world; and some are combinations of several elements, old and new. May these symbols continually remind you of God's Greatest Gift to us all, Jesus Christ. (Taken from Chrismons - © 1970)

The daughter of Louise Womble, Jane W. Tripp,  presented First Baptist Church with a handmade set of figures of the Wise Men.  The figures were painted and dressed by Mrs. Womble.  The garments are exquisite - being made of velvet and satin and covered in beads which were applied by hand.  The detail on the faces and hands is flawless. Thank you Jane for this special gift which had been made in love to share the Christmas Story.

On September 10th when Nancy and Dave thought they would be having choir practice, the choir surprised them with a covered dish dinner by the church family. The choir concluded the evening with a poem composed and read by Becky Jordan and then presented Dave and Nancy with two white rocking chairs. Rumor has it that they have been practicing kicking back and rocking!

Caroline, Mary Catherine, Sarah, and Charlotte Cox provide a program of violin music on Easter Sunday

Doctors Carson and Valerie Cox brought their four accomplished daughters to our church to accompany our choir and present an Easter Sunday program of violin music. These distinguished musicians have been featured with both orchestras of our state. Caroline, the oldest, is a student at East Carolina University where she will soon be joined by her sister, Mary Catherine. The other two daughters, Sarah and Charlotte, complete the quartet of gifted violinists.

On Easter Sunday, prior to the beginning of the service, they provided a twenty minute prelude of violin music. During the service they accompanied our organist and two pianists with the congregational hymns, Crown Him with Many Crowns, Christ the Lord is Risen Today, He Lives, How Great Thou Art chorus and Because He Lives. They also accompanied our three soloists, Becky Baldwin with The Cross Says It All, Angelynn Fox with By the Way of the Cross and Chad Gaines with All Rise. We are always privileged to have the Cox family join us at First Baptist Church. They bring much joy with their music.

Easter 2018

Easter morning service was filled with flowers and beautiful music. The Cantata "Blessed Redeemer-a Musical For Easter" created by Dennis and Nan Allen was performed by the First Baptist Choir. The Choir is directed by Randy Johnson. Randy accompanied the choir on the piano with Frankie Williamson adding his percussion skills. Dr. John Eldridge was the narrator and sound and video were handled by Paul Powell and Caleb Reeves.

A new Easter tradition was also present. Our church has had a cross in the yard which has changed its vestment from purple, to black, and now to white. The white will stay up 40 days until the day of Ascension when the cross will come down. Inside the church was a cross which the children (with some assistance) decorated with flowers at the beginning of the Cantata. The children's sermon, delivered by Linda McMasters, was a lesson on the Legend of the Dogwood. After the service the cross was moved to the front of the church for those passing to enjoy. Thank you Sam and Shelia Williams for the beautiful cross.

Elevator

Elevator

First Baptist Elevator Is Dedicated 10-13-2013

Due to a generous gift by member J. C. Bray, First Baptist Church has been blessed with the addition of an elevator. The elevator was built and dedicated to the memory of Marie Pell Bray. Marie was a long time member of First Baptist and faithful member of the choir. Marie was also a wonderful lady who often brought beauty to the church in the form of flowers from her gardens. Marie was also dedicated to helping maintain the beauty of the church.

J.C., long time chairman of the House and Grounds Committe, was joined by members of the House and Grounds Committe for the dedication. His niece, Becky Bray, also joined him to represent the family.  The project took place at the south end of the educational building and utilizes some of the space from a Sunday School Classroom on each of the ground, first, and second stories. The elevator will provides additional handicap access as well as greater access for those carrying packages, babies, and those who find the stairs a little hard to climb. The ramp on the South end of the church is still available along with the elevator chairs on the steps near the library - which have just been approved for use also. Hamlett Construction installed the elevator.

The church family approved funding for restoration of our beautiful stained glass windows when they approved the budget in the fall.  Stained Glass Artist, Sam Zinaich, is performing the restoration in early 2017.  Our church window restoration project will be one of the last prior to Sam's retirement.  We are very fortunate to have him accomplish our restoration at this time.  In the past, he has done other restoration on the windows.  This project should finish up the needed repairs.  Most recently, Sam created the window to the Heritage Room that was added in memory of Murray Andrew. The Scaffolding will be moving around the church as Sam works on different windows.   Please be careful and avoid the area where the ladders and scaffolding are placed.

Gideons 2015

Gideons 2015

Gideon Sunday at First Baptist was a trip around the world by Dr. Van Romine.  Dr. Romine presented inspiring stories about their work that touches lives locally - in our county jail and on the highways and byways around our state. Dr. Romine then took us further from home - out to the Midwest USA, and ended our journey in Australia. Dr. Romine also explained the new cooperative mission the Gideons are involved in called the Lifebook Movement. The Lifebook has been distributed to over 17.9 million students by over 1.1 million students.  The students are able to take Christian literature into the schools where the churches and the Gideons are not allowed to go.  Click here to see information about the Lifebook Movement.

Dr. Romine and Becky thank you for sharing stories about the work the Gideons do. We also want to extend a special note of appreciation to the First Baptist Members who are Gideons for the work they do to share the Gospel.  The Gideons also appreciated those present who laid cash and checks into the open Bibles located at each exit door.  First Baptist Gideon Mahlon Snider introduced Dr. Romine to the congregation and Buster Jordan was one of the Gideons with an open Bible taking donations for the Gideon work.

Gideons 2016

Gideons 2016

First Baptist's own Steve Marsh was the 2016 Gideon speaker.  Steve explained the mission of the Gideons in Chatham County and the world.  He is shown here with one of the Testaments that the Gideons share with the world.  He shared his testimony of what the Gideon program has done for him personally to help him grow in his walk with Christ. He also shared a powerful video showing the force of a Gideon Bible in the hands of a lost soul. An offering was collected after the service and $5,074 was collected.  The money will be used to supply the Bibles, the Testaments, and the Life Books which are all given free of charge.  If you have picked up a Gideon Bible in a hotel or hospital room you have been touched by the Gideons.

This year’s speaker was Dr. Glenn Phillips, Jr. who is the minister of the First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, NC. Dr. Phillips grew up in Siler City, and he and his immediate family were active members of First Baptist Church of Siler City for many years. Our former minister, Rev. C.R. Smith, Jr, was very influential in Glenn’s early life and was instrumental in Glenn’s decision to give his life to Christ and become a minister. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina for two terms, and has served on the national Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. He and his wife Allyson, who works as a Surgical Technologist at Wayne Memorial Hospital, have two grown children, Josh, who is married to Renee, and Rob, who is married to Nickie. They both live in Goldsboro.

Our church welcomed one of our own on October 8, 2017, when David Jacobs came to present our Homecoming message. David Jacobs grew up in First Baptist Church in Siler City and graduated from Jordan-Matthews High School in 1961. Currently he lives in Statesboro, Georgia, with Ann, his wife of 35 years, who is a retired educator. His family includes his son, Mark Jacobs and wife Paula, of Statesboro, GA and Stepson, Carlos Cason and wife Christine of Decatur, GA. He is grandfather to five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His brother Gordon and wife Pam live in Asheville. David retired early as State Sales Manager from Moorman Manufacturing Company due to complete loss of sight caused by retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease. David and Ann are active members of Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church where they are members of the Servants Sunday School Class. They are active in the New Beginnings in Christ Ministry in Garfield, GA and are active members of the Dayspring Walk to Emmaus. They lead the Griefshare Ministry at their church. Please join us as we welcome David and Ann to Homecoming at First Baptist Church on the second Sunday in October. Immediately following the morning worship service, our church will host Sunday dinner in the fellowship hall for all who attend.

Homecoming 10-9-16

On October 9th, we celebrated 127 years of worship in Siler City and 86 years in our current, beautiful sanctuary.

Our guest speaker was Dr. Mitchell Simpson, Siler City native and Jordan-Matthews graduate who is now Pastor of University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Many of you will remember Mitch growing up in Siler City and graduating from Jordan -Matthews in 1968. As a Morehead Scholar, Dr. Simpson earned a BA in English Literature from UNC-CH in 1972. He received his Master of Divinity (Theology) in 1976 from Duke University Divinity School and a PhD in Humanities in 1986 from Florida State University. After pastoring at Baptist churches in Monticello, Florida and Wingate, North Carolina, Dr. Simpson was called to University Baptist in 1990 where he continues to serve the Lord and share the Word of God. Dr. Simpson and his wife, Betty, live in Carrboro and are the parents of three adult children.

Kitchen Remodel 2018

On April 15, 2018  after the worship service our church held a Church Conference to vote on the Kitchen Renovation project that we have been working on for over a year.  The members present unanimously approved the project and the budget to remodel the church kitchen. Thanks were given to Marie Marsh and Faye Ward for their untiring service as Chairmen of the Bereavement Dinner Committee and the Other Meals/Special Occasions Committee. They both served as consultants to the House and Grounds Committee during the design phase of the project.

Since Marie was a little under the weather, the motion to proceed with the project was made by Faye Ward and on behalf of Marie Marsh. Thanks to all the men and women who help with dinners at FBC and we hope you have a brand new shiny kitchen very soon!

Also, thanks Tommy Emerson for your Children's Sermon topic on it is better to give than to receive, using the building fund as a focus for the message. Tommy gave all the children $1.00 which they put into a Building Fund envelope and placed in the offering plate.  Great examples for all of us!

If you are ready to contribute to the project, please mark your checks kitchen fund. There are Building Fund envelopes and pledge cards available at the church office and around the church.

The worship service for June 27th was a celebration of the freedom our nation allows its citizens.  The men and women present who have served in the armed forces were recognized.  The music and words of the service caused those present to reflect on the sacrifices made by others so that we had the liberty and freedom to gather in our church and worship God today.  Pastor Tony's message reminded us that our nation's founding fathers viewed prayer and seeking God's counsel as an essential part of government.

Summer of the Child - Summer of 2015

Summer of the Child - Summer of 2015

The first Summer of the Child event included a petting zoo - furnished by Billy and Yvonne Petty. June 17th

On Wednesday, June 17th First Baptist held its first of three Summer of the Child activities and dinner event. Summer can be long and disappointing when you are a child.  Who will keep you?  Who will you play with?  Will your parents take you places for fun?  The excitement of the first day away from school may mean not having enough food for three nutritious meals or spending long days without much to do from mid-June through late August.  School personnel tell us that they're concerned for the safety, good nutrition and retention of the knowledge and skills that students have acquired at school.

The purpose of these Wednesdays was not to add to our church membership; although, that could happen.  The purpose was to share the gospel compassionately and courageously with people around us or withing a five mile radius of our church.  The Great Commission and the Great Commandment require that we talk about Christ to a lost and dying world.  Luke 10:27 and 1 John 3:17 affirm that we should practice true religion by caring for people and meeting their primary and spiritual needs.

Vacation Bible School 2012

Vacation Bible School 2012

Adventures on Promise Island was a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School! The children learned 5 of the promises God has given us. He has promised to always be with us, care for us, meet our needs, save us, and answer us.
Each Bible story was brought to life through a variety of activities such as role playing, dressing as characters, and even seeing Lazarus return alive! Ask the children who came to tell you the promises and some of the stories they learned.

Music and craft times were so much fun as was recreation time-especially the water balloons! Delicious refreshments were served each day and the ladies did such a great job having a variety of delicious and attractive foods for treats. They also had beautiful decorations to enhance the area.

We thank each worker who came so faithfully and gave of their time and energy to work with the children. A special thank you also to the parents who brought their children to have an opportunity to experience Vacation Bible School this year. Although the adults were tired each day it was a blessing to see the sparkle in the eyes of the children and to hear them say what they had learned and enjoyed.
