Our Church in Transition

The following letter was sent to church members on June 14th:

Dear Church Family,

As you know, Pastor Tony Capehart gave notice of his resignation from First Baptist during the morning worship on April 28th.  The Deacon Board and Trustees have reviewed the church Constitution and By-Laws and prayerfully considered the resignation.  Pastor Tony’s resignation has been accepted and will be effective July 31st 2019.  Please be in prayer for Pastor Tony, his family, and our church during this transition period.  The Deacon Board has prepared a financial exit package for Pastor Tony.  Funds are available in the current budget to cover the cost.

We will celebrate Tony’s time at First Baptist at our second summer picnic on July 21st at 5 PM.  If you would like to bring cards or other items to wish the Capehart family well, there will be a basket at the picnic for you to place your cards in.

The Deacon Board has reviewed their responsibility and named a group of four deacons to fill the pulpit during the time that will be required to find an interim pastor.  The Interim Pastor Search Committee will report to the church at a later date on their progress.  Once an interim pastor has been secured, a Pastor Search Committee will be named as directed by the Constitution and By-Laws.

The Deacon Board has met with Rev. Sandy Marks who is Senior Consultant for Church Health and Revitalization. Rev. Marks works with the NC Baptist State Convention.  He will meet again with leaders of our church to begin a discussion on what we can do to revitalize and strengthen our church as we move to call a new pastor.  Our associational minister, Rev. Eric Davidson, has also contacted us with an offer help us move forward with the transitional period.

The Deacon Board acknowledges that our church will be in transition, likely for a while.  During this time each of us will be particularly important to the future of our church.  Without a fulltime pastor each of us will need to accept additional responsibility and reach out to each other for support and ways that we can move our church forward.  With prayer and Christian love for each other we can move through this transition period and come out on the other side as a strong voice for Christ in our community.

Also, please consider this as notice that there will be a church conference on July 14th in order to vote on the nomination of Mahlon Snider to fill the Trustee position vacated upon the passing of Paul Powell.

Sincerely,

Sherlynn D. Powell, Deacon Chair

Thomas Emerson, Trustee Chair
